BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Sport and Cultural Activities and Clubs

The world demands much from its citizens today and preparation for life after school comes as much from the student’s life outside of the classroom as it does within. Reddam House Berkshire provides a tremendous range of enrichment activities – art, dance, drama, music, public speaking, societies, and sport - which encourage every child to find something which will enable her or him to develop the personal qualities, attitudes and skills to complement their academic success.

Trips and enrichment activities, alongside residential visits and field trips provide abundant opportunities to see the world from a different angle and to be inspired in your own learning journey.

Clubs & Activities Overview

Speech and Drama

(Junior/Middle/Senior)

Whether your passion is for the stage or you are happier in the Tech box, there are activities to suit for all ages. At various times of the year, rehearsals for major productions or for competitions take centre stage with skills based fun at times around this.

Debating is another popular pastime in all schools with opportunities to take part in inter-house and external competitions.

Optional LAMDA lessons allow students the opportunity to work through their grades and to gain experience and UCAS points along the way.

Dance

To say this is a thriving area of the school would be underestimating the life of this busy department. With classes for all age ranges and skill levels, students can work towards formal examinations with the Royal Academy of Dance and International Dance Teachers Association in Ballet, Freestyle and Street, or just dance for pleasure in Contemporary, Latin or Ballroom. There is also an auditioned Dance Company and an extra class for our dance scholars.

We are proud hosts of the ISA National Dance Competition which annually sees schools from around the country competing from key stage 2 to 5. In addition, we organise an annual Dance Show following a different theme each year, previous years have seen, Gatsby, Cats, Circus and Around the World.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme-02
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

(Year 9/Senior)

There is always great excitement in Year 9 as the students begin their first DofE Award, Bronze. Students undertake training in navigation and safety and then undertake a practice hike before completing the assessed event. Many students opt to use one of the other Extra-Curricular activities as their skill or physical component and we offer support to students wishing to undertake some aspect of volunteering through the school.

As our own assessing and awarding centre, the expectation is that the pupils will progress through the various levels of the Award, from Bronze, Silver through to Gold by the time participants leave the School. It is always a cause for great celebration when students visit the Palace to receive their Gold Awards!

Combined Cadet Force

(Year 9/Senior)

RHB benefits from having its own Army section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). All Year 9 and 10 pupils have the opportunity to participate in the CCF, after which involvement is voluntary. The CCF helps to develop our students by introducing them to a plethora of activities and skills which assist in the steps toward adult life. Some of the activities include: Leadership Training, First Aid, Map-Reading, Drill, Shooting, Field-Craft, Expedition Training and Survival Skills.

In Year 9 cadets work to achieve their Basic Proficiency Certificate and then progress to more advanced topics in Year 10. Senior cadets can then advance their personal training and expand upon their leadership skills by becoming Non Commissioned Officers, with responsibilities including contribution to the training of younger cadets.

An integral part of the training is the termly Field Day where all cadets participate in a whole day of CCF activity. There are also several voluntary weekend exercises at local training areas, an annual adventurous training camp, during the October half term, and a military Summer Camp during the Summer holidays.

Senior cadets may also use their voluntary service toward completion of the D of E award scheme.

With a fantastic range of facilities on offer, it is no surprise that the Sports Department provide a rich and varied activity programme. Our younger Juniors have the opportunity to take part in skills development clubs honing their techniques to join the more sport specific clubs for the older pupils.

Depending on the season, match practice may be supplemented with tennis, athletics, cross country running etc. Swimming clubs and teams practice early morning and afternoons with students benefitting from professional coaching advice.

Sometimes you just enjoy a subject so much, that you cannot get enough of it! Maths Clubs for all ages, Science Crest Awards and Creative Writing offer an opportunity to explore your passions outside of the curriculum.

In our Junior school we offer verbal and non-verbal reasoning practice, great for developing flexibility of approach, vocabulary and patterning skills. Regular practise of timed papers helps hone examination skills too.

We also offer drop in sessions for students who may want to review material with a member of staff or to gain further practice in a subject area.
