15 October 2017

On Sunday 15th October, selected cadets from all the services around the country (CCF, ACF, Air Cadets, Sea Cadets) gathered together at Flemish Farm Windsor, home of the Light Cavalry HAC, to take part in the cadet qualifying round that would decide who would go on to represent the cadet movement at the Unformed Services Showjumping competition.  This is a prestigious annual event organised by our own Captain Smith and is open to all members of the uniformed services throughout the world.  The unusual circumstance of this competition is that it takes place at the Home of the Kings Troop at Woolwich and all competitors are nominated a Kings Troop horse at random.  These horses are generally very big and strong, more used to pulling ceremonial gun carriages than jumping fences and this levels the playing field for all the riders.

The standard of riding in the qualifying round was very high.  Each of the competitors were given a 20/25 minute ride with jumps and the judges were primarily looking at how they managed a Light Cavalry horse again picked at random rather than how many faults they picked up.   Reddam House was represented by Lola who rode well but was just pipped at the post and was unfortunate not to be selected to go to Woolwich this coming weekend.  Only one representative from each unit or school is allowed to take part in the qualifier so we wish Lola better luck next year - unless of course we have more candidates!
