8:29 - Calm, ready, beautiful……
8:30 - The day begins. Each child and each parent is welcomed into the room and the children independently perform their morning jobs of self-registration and putting their belongings away. As the light streams through the windows, a picture frame to our stunning outdoor landscape, the children venture into the classroom; a room about them, for them and a reflection of them.
In the Reception class at Reddam House, we are indeed, ‘doing it differently’. We have developed a unique practice that gathers together the best of educational philosophy and current thinking.
Each week the timetable allows for specialist teaching in a multitude of subjects, taught by subject specialists who allow children to develop their confidence and potential in subjects such as art, dance, drama, French, gymnastics, music, P.E. and swimming. Learning in these areas has a significant impact on the children’s development as a whole child.
Reception at Reddam House is exciting, vibrant and filled with joy. We will end with a quote from a current Reception student, “Reception makes me happy.”
REGGIO EMILIA INSPIRED & EYFS
REGGIO EMILIA INSPIRED & EYFS
Our inspiration is from Reggio Emilia and the essence is that children should be citizens that ask questions and challenge thoughts and theories. Each child is thought of as an individual and our curriculum is developed from the children’s interests and wonderings. We aim to answer their questions through our teaching. The EYFS is a skill-based curriculum and in Reception at Reddam House we take this opportunity to allow children to become independent and confident learners, taking the role as planners and co-constructers of the curriculum and the learning that is to take place.
Underpinning this exciting approach is serious academic rigour. The children are taught synthetic phonics from their second week in Reception. It is a fast paced, exciting, game playing programme where children enjoy structure and routine each day as they learn the foundations of a life long love of reading and writing. Each week there is a different theme in Mathematics, designed to cover each nuance of the Early Learning Goal, where children enjoy exciting and active mental maths warm ups, problem solving teaching using interactive resources at all times. We go beyond expectations and encourage children to use those ‘big numbers’ and mathematical terminology.
‘Challenge’ is not a scary word in our Reception room. CHEX (Challenge and Extension) is introduced to the children as a fun way to access many activities at their proximal level of development each week. This is part of their learning and children have the independence to choose when and how to complete their challenges, therefore not interrupting the very important business of planning, building, balancing, hypothesising and engineering that fabulous tower in the construction area.
